Generell informasjon

A curly coat in horses, known particularly as the distinctive trait of the American Bashkir Curly Horse, is caused by a complex interaction between two separate genes, KRT25 (this test) and SP6(DNA test P330). These same genes can also cause hypotrichosis: a loss of tail and mane hair.

Horses with a genotype of KRT25 A/A and SP6 C/C develop a curly coat and complete hypotrichosis. KRT25 G/A and SP6 C/C or C/T result in a curly coat with incomplete hypotrichosis. KRT25 G/G and SP6 C/T or T/T result in a curly coat with normal hair growth. KRT25 G/G and SP6 C/C is the genotype of an unaffected, straight-coated horse.

Kliniske egenskaper

A curly coat in horses presents as short, coarse curls or waves. Horses with incomplete hypotrichosis, or “scanty tail”, retain some degree of hair growth on their mane and tail. Horses with complete hypotrichosis, or “string tail”, have no mane and a bare tail.
