Generell informasjon

Congenital Idiopathic Megaesophagus (CIM) or Megaoesophagus is a disorder of the digestive tract in which the esophagus fails to properly function, resulting in difficulty swallowing and various complications. In the German Shepherd, CIM occurs twice as often in males as in females. Additionally, a mutation to the gene MCHR2 has been found to be linked with a greatly increased risk of developing CIM.

Kliniske egenskaper

Dogs suffering from CIM have an esophagus that cannot effectively perform peristalsis (the transport of swallowed food to the stomach), which results in a stretched esophagus and also causes coughing and regular vomiting. Affected puppies suffer reduced growth and fail to thrive, and are also vulnerable to complications such as aspiration pneumonia and bowel obstruction.
