Generell informasjon
Cystinuria is a metabolic disorder which causes a buildup of the amino acid cysteine in the urine. This buildup can form into painful kidney and bladder stones, which can cause further complications such as obstructed urine flow and may ultimately require an operation to remove. Dogs with cystinuria can be fed a special diet to minimize the chances of the formation of cysteine stones.
This particular type of the disease, Cystinuria type II-A, is caused by a dominant mutation to the gene SLC3A1. The variant analysed in this test occurs in the Australian Cattle Dog.
Kliniske egenskaper
Cystinuri fører til dannelse av cystin calculi (steiner) i nyre og/eller blære. Fordi menn har lange, smale urinrør sammenlignet med kvinner, er irritasjon og blokkering av kalkuli mye mer vanlig hos hannen. Hanner med Cystinuria lider gjentatte betennelser i urinveiene og er i fare for urinblokkering, noe som, hvis de ikke behandles omgående, kan føre til nyresvikt, blærebrudd og død. Den genetiske faktoren er kontinuerlig til stede, og kan forårsake problemer i alle aldre.
