Generell informasjon

Polyneuropathy is a neurological disorder characterized by damage to the peripheral nerves. The variant of the disease analysed in this test is found in the Greyhound, and is known as Early Onset Progressive Polyneuropathy (EOPP) or
Greyhound Polyneuropathy (GHPN). It is caused by an autosomal recessive mutation to the gene NDRG1. A related variant, Alaskan Malamute Polyneuropathie (AMPN), is also offered as a seperate test.

Kliniske egenskaper

Clinical features include weakness, numbness, and pain of the feet progressing to the legs and other body parts. The disease can be acute or chronic and the first clinical signs can usually be observed between 3 and 9 months of age. In rare cases, it is only revealed after 7 months.

As the disease progresses, affected dogs may eventually require euthanasia for humane reasons due to loss of mobility and respiratory failure.
